Shawnta Wright

Founder of Mindful Bodies, Licensed Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS), MA in Community Agency Counseling, AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer

Shawnta (pronounced Shawn Tay) is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS). She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1996 from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters Degree in Community Agency Counseling from NCCU in 2006. Shawnta has been a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer since 1996 and a licensed Zumba instructor since 2011. In 2010, Shawnta bridged together her background in mental health and physical fitness and founded Mindful Bodies, LLC.

Shawnta provides mental health counseling to adults, adolescents, children, couples, families and groups for issues including, but not limited to, general weight management, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, BLM and LGBTQIA related concerns, identity development, stress management, self-esteem, self image, body image, life transitions, domestic violence, sexual assault, couples, families, parenting and relationship issues and Gottman Method Couples Counseling. Shawnta provides clinical supervision to provisionally licensed counselors (LCMHCA) and she also offers mental health counseling to other therapists for issues that include, but are not limited to, work/ life balance, countertransference, self awareness, trauma, professional identity development, relationships, identity, life transitions, general weight management, eating disorders and mood disorders.

Shawnta has actively been working since the 1990s and to promote equity and justice for all marginalized people, including women and girls of African descent. She was a mentor with the Big Brother/ Big Sisters organization and a volunteer with Sisterhood Agenda before she founded and ran Sister on the Move (SOME) from 1999 - 2004. SOME was a non-profit grassroots organization that paired female mentors of African descent with girls ages 9 - 18 of African descent.

Shawnta currently serves as therapist, clinical supervisor and as an informal mentor to African American women and girls. Fun fact about Shawnta is that Shawnta was the coach of the Durham Senior (citizens) Divas & Dudes cheerleaders from 2004 - 2010.
